#2 Can you Smell it?
I'm sure just about everyone can relate to this one. Lilacs! There is no better time of year to "have to" mow lawn than when the lilacs are in bloom. Especially when they surround the yard on three sides so no matter which part of the yard your are mowing or which direction the wind is blowing (yes, the wind blows around here) you can enjoy the aroma. I know that the lilacs aren't the first flower of the spring but don't feel like spring is really here until their scent fills the air.
As kids we always picked bunches of these delightful aromatic flowers and put them in old mason jars around the house. Mom always smiled and said "isn't that the best smell in the world". When my own kids would do the same for me, I often wondered if my mom did the same thing I would do..... when the kids weren't around I would take their precious bunches of lilacs back outside and shake the bugs out of them and then bring them back inside. Or, am I the only one who ever did that?
Back in 2006 we had a special treat at our place. Well, if you were trying to look at the bright side of things you would consider it a treat. After a severe hail storm that destroyed a 1500 acres of our crops, I was down at the barn brushing my horses and I noticed a scent in the air that I just couldn't quite put my finger on. You see, it wasn't the "normal" barn smell. Upon looking around I found that the lilacs by the barn were blooming again! In September! That is the one and only time I have ever seen the lilacs bloom twice. Goes to show you that something good comes from everything in life. Sometimes we just have to "look around" to find it.
Fill up your senses with this scent while it lasts. It's a long time until next spring.
