can you smell it #3
This time you are all going to think I've really lost it. Last week my son traded in his old 1086 IH tractor and the day they brought it in to the dealership I happened to stop by their shop. I climbed up into the cab for old times sake. The instant I sat in the seat I felt the nostalgia of the old girl. You see, my dad always had IH tractors and only IH tractors on the farm when I was growing up. I remember my dad entering in the local tractor pull and winning ribbons. That was before anyone ever hear of a "modified" tractor pull. I don't remember the actual tractor pull but I do remember dad setting up kids up on the hood of the tractor set down by the trees south and west of the house to take pictures. Anyway, getting back to the smell thing.... after all that's what this is all about. When I climbed in to that cab I breathed in deep and just then I realized that that cab smelled the same as the cab's of my dad's old tractors. I don't remember the exact numbers of them but they were either a 1086, 1286, or 1486. Must be something in that "86" series. I think there are probably a lot of old tractors, trucks or cars that had that distinctive smell of those past days gone by. The newer tractors, you know those that are only 20 years old, all seem like they have the "new car" smell. Well, there might some out there that have a strong "cow" smell. It's that smell that brings back a lot of memories and emotions of those long days spent on the rock picker, cultivator or plow and you felt blessed that the ac and the radio worked.
I haven't been back to the dealership to climb in the old girl since they "cleaned" her up to sell, but I'm sure that no matter how much power washing and scrubbing they did, that smell is still there.
